Day 1.
After arriving at the Youth With a Mission (YWAM) base at 1:00am this morning and getting a solid 5 hours of sleep, I thought the best way to introduce myself to my fellow Discipleship Training School (DTS) mates would be by falling down the stairs on the way to morning worship. I was right.
It gets better. A couple of hours later I told the story to all who weren't there, and immediately proceeded to trip over a guy's leg and subsequently stub my toe on an unexpected step up into the kitchen, which I fell into.
Safe to say that my dignity has been severely damaged today. But no matter, because I ate stinky tofu. And although the smell is something akin to 10 people pooping in a bucket and sticking it under your nose (I realize that this does not paint a pretty picture, but the Taiwanese people don't deny it), it only tastes half as bad as it smells and I potentially regained the respect I had lost earlier in the day by having some for lunch.
Taiwan is only 5% Christian, but I live in a house full of people who are passionate about sharing Christ. There are currently 13 students in the DTS and we come from all around the world: Australia, Florida, Japan... I think the coolest thing that God has been teaching me lately is how He has people EvErYwhEre. Not only in the places I mentioned, but last week I met hundreds of Christians during my visits to Georgia and California and on the flights in between. Just in my time here I've met some from Canada, other parts of the US, England, South Africa, Korea, Holland. I guess I always knew He had people working around the world, but it's cool to be united with them and see their passion for God.
Prayer Request: Please pray for Christians around the world to be accepting of non-Christians and not to come of as judgmental so that no one, regardless of where they are at and the choices they are making, would feel uncomfortable approaching Christians to ask questions or even for friendship.
"After forty days Noah opened a window he had made in the ark and sent out a raven, and it kept flying back and forth until the water had dried up from the earth. Then he sent out a dove to see if the water had receded from the surface of the ground. But the dove could find nowhere to perch because there was water over all the surface of the earth; so it returned to Noah in the ark. He reached out his hand and took the dove and brought it back to himself in the ark. He waited seven more days and again sent out the dove from the ark. When the dove returned to him in the evening, there in its beak was a freshly plucked olive leaf! Then Noah knew that the water had receded from the earth."~Genesis 8:6-11
Hi Katrina - Isn't amazing how we sometimes "fall into" (pun pun) the ministry God has in mind for us. Praying for you today, and looking forward to hearing more about your adventure.
ReplyDeleteDearest Katrina, Tommy and I just read your first blog. We laughed at your tofu description and smile that you are already having an amazing experience. We are praying for your safety and your new venture, and we are glad that you are also having fun. Love reading your blog! Love, Mom and Tommy :D
ReplyDeleteKatrina,
ReplyDelete(Dad here---using Mom's acc't). We're so very very proud of you, so happy that you are having this experience, and so grateful for sfety in travel. It is said that a journey of 1000 miles begins w/a single step. How ironic that your journey of 10,000 miles ended w/a single mis-step. You're constantly on our prayers. Go with God! Love, Dad

ReplyDelete... so that no one would feel comfortable approaching Christians? ... What?
I think you might have had some weird sentence structure going on. Or is this a weird attempt on a joke? I'm confused.
hahaha oops. that'll happen :P
DeleteSe cayo! I'm also glad to see you falling in step with God's plans for your life and maintaining your sense of humor. Missed you in Nicaragua! I'll be praying for you as always!

YAYA GO KATRINA!! So I couldn't help myself and I looked up 'step' and the bible and this is what i found:
ReplyDelete“If the LORD delights in a man’s way, he makes his steps firm; though he stumble, he will not fall, for the LORD upholds him with his hand.” (NIV)
So Go FORTH! You've got the support from your housemates and even more, the upholding strength from God.
ENJOY TODAY! Love, Maddie
I just reread this (instead of doing homework) and it immediately reminded me of the excerpt from A Grand New Day from January 4th called "Falling Forward" at the top it says "The Lord upholds all who are falling." Psalm 145:14 Yeah you fell, but so what. God's on your side and gave you something to remember and laugh about with new friends! Also, I had tofu today at lunch in honor of you...can't say it was nearly as strong smelling as yours though. haha.
